This summer, several Dreamers had the opportunity to intern at professional companies across New York City. This gave them the chance to learn about how a professional office environment operates, how to make connections, and help them decide what types of careers they might be interested in pursuing. Many thanks to the companies who generously hosted our Dreamers, and to Chelsea Montero, an 11th -grade Dreamer at our Chelsea-Elliott cohort, for sharing her experience!
Dreamer Chelsea had an internship this summer at Broadway Cares//Equity Fights AIDS
This summer I interned at Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids. This is a non-profit organization that raises money to support people living with HIV/AIDS. Groups from all over the globe ask for a donation from Broadway Cares to help support their organizations for people living with HIV/AIDS.
I did many types of work at Broadway Cares. I got to read a few of the groups stories and I had to choose which stories stood out the most to put on the website so people can donate. I also got the opportunity to work with a camp called Revolucion Latina, which Broadway Cares donates to as well. This camp helps kids between the ages of 7-17 to bring awareness to social issues, encourage teamwork and try to break the campers and volunteers out of their shells.
I enjoyed working this summer. It felt rewarding to be able to earn my own money and buy my own uniform for school. I was also able to buy a gift for my little sister for her fifth birthday.
